Tattoos, brown spots and other pigmentation issues used to be both permanent and irreversible — but not anymore. The Q-switched Alexandrite and Q-switched ND:YAG are two revolutionary laser systems that have been removing unwanted lesions and tattoos for more than a decade.
Q-switched laser systems are a popular choice for a variety of unwanted skin conditions because they can effectively treat a variety of colors, as well as darkly pigmented tissue.
Q-switched laser systems are safe and effective treatments for most skin types, but not those who have very dark skin. Also, patients who tan regularly should wait at least 4-6 weeks before undergoing treatment. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for Q-switched lasers is to schedule a consultation at our practice.
A single session with a Q-switched laser usually takes between 20-40 minutes. This can vary depending on the size of your treatment area. In most cases, pain and discomfort is non-irritating, but a mild anesthetic will be applied in advance if you have very sensitive skin or if a large area is being treated.
During your session, we will use a handheld device to deliver quick pulsating beams of light, which will pass harmlessly through your skin. Upon contact with the underlying pigment, the laser will cause a chemical reaction, shattering the unwanted pigment into tiny particles. Over the course of the next few weeks, your body’s lymphatic system will gradually carry away the unwanted pigment.
Your recovery will depend on the size and location of your treatment area. In most cases, Q-switched laser treatment will cause your skin to produce scabs, blisters or mild flaking during the healing period. Patients who have had facial areas treated usually take a few days off from normal activities, while those choosing to treat their body or hands usually resume normal activities the next day.
Dramatic improvements can usually be seen after just a single treatment with a Q-switched laser system. However, more than one treatment is often recommended for patients seeking tattoo removal. Most tattoo removal patients benefit from 4-8 treatments, performed in 3-4 week intervals. We will work with you to design a customized treatment plan during your consultation.
