Like the eyelids, the neck region is one of the first places to show visible signs of aging – making it a very popular area in which people desire rejuvenation. While some people develop excess fat in the neck at an early age, others develop it later in life along with other typical signs of aging in the face and neck. In both age groups, the neck is a common area for liposuction. Neck liposuction is less invasive, requires less down time and creates more natural results than many other facial rejuvenation procedures. In fact, both Dr. Gotkin and Dr. Sarnoff are renowned for their neck contouring procedure – The Neck’s Best Thing – that employs Smartlipo® and PrecisionTx™ to contour the neck with gentle laser energy.
If you are in good overall health, and concerned about the presence of excess fat in the neck, then you may benefit from neck liposuction. Neck liposuction can treat:
Following liposuction, the neck will appear smoother, tighter and will convey a more youthful appearance. With the fat removed, the neck has a thinner and more toned contour. Results will be long-lasting, provided there are no dramatic shifts in overall body weight.
Neck liposuction cannot be used to treat severe inelastic neck skin. Alternative procedures such as a face lift or neck lift may be recommended to address this condition. In intermediate situations, Smartlipo / PrecisionTx may be used to “melt” excess fat and tighten the loose skin of the neck.
Neck liposuction lasts 30-60 minutes and only requires a local anesthetic combined with a sedative to make you drowsy. Tiny incisions will be made – often behind the ears or under the chin. Once the incisions have been made, the laser fiber – like a thin strand of angel hair pasta – is inserted to “melt” the fat. After the fat is liquefied, another thin tube is inserted to gently draw out the excess liquefied fat. Sutures are used to close the incisions and you are placed in a compression garment that helps contour the neck even further after surgery.
There may be some swelling and bruising for 7-10 days following the surgery. Each procedure is different and the recovery time varies.
You should be able to return to your normal activities in about one week. The results will be evident. The swelling will take a few months to completely subside, and the incision lines, although well-concealed, will continue to fade for 12 months. The final result should be evident in six months.
