Following the success of major weight loss, or often just with the aging process, many are faced with the reality of unsightly loose skin and excess fat present on the inner and outer thighs. A thigh lift, also known as thighplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to surgically remove this persistent fat and loose skin and reveal a more slender body profile.
Aging, gravity, loss of skin elasticity and weight fluctuations can all contribute to accumulation of excess tissue on the thighs. Thigh lift surgery can benefit people who are motivated to tighten and improve the contour of their thighs. You may be a potential candidate if you meet some of the following criteria:
Through a combination of liposuction – often the gentler laser-assisted Smartlipo – and surgical excision, a thigh lift can significantly improve the size, shape and contour of your thighs. Other body contouring procedures may be performed in conjunction with a thigh lift to create a slimmer overall appearance.
Thigh lift surgery may not be right for everyone. The best way to find out if you are an ideal candidate is to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Gotkin at Cosmetique. Factors such as your medical history, current health status and cosmetic goals will be taken into consideration during the consultation process.
This two-to-three-hour procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. There are various types of thigh lifts; therefore, the location, length and pattern of the incision – all individualized to your particular situation – will vary. When possible, incisions will be made in the natural creases and contours of the body to conceal scarring. As the incisions are made, the excess skin and fat will be gently removed. If necessary, liposuction will also be used to remove adjacent localized deposits of fat.
Following the removal of excess skin and fat, incisions will be closed; occasionally, temporary drains will be used to collect fluid buildup under the skin after surgery. You will be placed in an elasticized compression garment to minimize excessive swelling and bruising and to facilitate healing.
After surgery, it is common for patients to experience swelling, bruising and discomfort at the incision sites. Dr. Gotkin will provide you with specific aftercare instructions, as well as oral medication to manage your discomfort. Patients are encouraged to start walking as soon as possible. Most patients are mobile the first day after surgery, but strenuous physical activities should be restricted for 6-8 weeks.
Recovery times vary among patients, but most are able to resume work and other normal activities by one to three weeks after surgery. The results of your thigh lift will become gradually apparent over the course of several weeks as swelling and bruising begin to subside. It will take six months to see your final result and even longer for incision lines to fade.
